Description
Melatonin belongs to indole-heterocyclic compounds, its chemical name is N-acetyl-5-methoxy-tryptamine, also known as pineal hormone. After synthesising, it is stored in the pineal body, where sympathetic nerve excitation innervates pineal cells to release this chemical.
The secretion of melatonin has obvious circadian rhythm, which is inhibited during the day and active at night. It can inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, reduce the content of gonadotropin releasing hormone, gonadotropin, luteinizing hormone and follicular estrogen, and directly act on the gonadal gland to reduce the content of androgen, estrogen and progesterone. In addition, MT has strong neuroendocrine immunomodulatory activity and free radical scavenging antioxidant capacity, which may become a new method and approach for antiviral therapy. MT is eventually metabolized in the liver, and damage to liver cells can affect MT levels in the body.
