O sulfato de bário de grau médico é um pó branco sem forma, com densidade relativa de 4,50 g/cm³(15℃) e ponto de fusão de 1580℃. Não tem gosto e não é venenoso. Resistente a ácidos e álcalis, dureza Mohs (3-3,5), pode absorver raios X e outras radiações perigosas.
