El sulfato de bario de grado médico es un polvo blanco sin forma, densidad relativa 4,50 g/cm³(15℃), punto de fusión 1580℃. No tiene sabor ni es venenoso. Resistente a ácidos y álcalis, dureza Mohs (3-3,5), puede absorber rayos X y otras radiaciones peligrosas.
